 Cabinet Refacing Q&A

1. What exactly do you mean by “cabinet refacing”?

J M Clemente Co. refaces cabinetry by first removing all old doors and drawer fronts, hardware, molding, and valances. Sometimes the old drawer boxes are removed and replaced. All exposed sides of the cabinet carcasses (or boxes) are prepped to receive a real wood veneer. The real wood veneer of your choice has been stained and finished to your specifications. The veneer is applied with a pressure sensitive contact cement with virtually no odor or fumes. New prefinished cove or crown molding, valances and other necessary trim are installed. Next the new custom-built matching solid wood doors and drawer fronts are installed. Most customers prefer the European style hinges that are self-closing and completely concealed when the door is closed. Handles, knobs or pulls of your choice are then installed. Many options are available, like pull-outs, under-cabinet lighting, and open shelving. In many instances our customers decide to have a new countertop installed along with ceramic tile or some other decorative touch. Not only is all of this done in less time than it would take to remove your old cabinets and install new ones, it is also done with less dust and debris.

2. How do I know if cabinet refacing is a good remodeling option for me?

JM Clemente Co. looks at two factors to determine if a customer is a good candidate for cabinet refacing:

#1. Are you satisfied with your present layout or design?
#2. Are your cabinet carcasses solid and worth veneering?

If the answer to both of these questions is yes, refacing is definitely a good option for you! Adding a new island or peninsula usually isn’t a problem, but your original cabinet carcasses need to be sound. The savings usually amount to thousands of dollars if refacing is chosen over replacement. Keep in mind that JM Clemente Co. offers a five-year warranty on your refacing project!

3. Do I have as many choices with refacing my cabinets as I would if I replaced them?

JM Clemente Co. offers over twenty different types of woods, and over seventy door styles to choose from. All of our stains are hand-wiped after they are applied. Few manufacturers still take the time to carefully hand wipe the stain to give the wood the rich tone and texture you’ll find on our products. The stain colors available include any color manufactured by the Sherwin Williams company. Custom stain and stain-glaze color matching is also available. The available combinations of stain and glaze effects are virtually endless. We also offer distressing, speckling, and antiquing. So, do you have as many choices?  We feel you have more!

4. Do I need to empty my cabinets?

No. Unlike replacing your cabinets, where everything must be removed, it isn’t necessary to empty your cabinets for refacing— but it is sometimes necessary to empty your drawers.

5. How long does it take?*

Every refacing project is different. If your kitchen isn’t extremely large, refacing your cabinets and installing new door and drawer fronts may take two days. If your kitchen is large and the countertop is being replaced, it could take several days. Naturally the bigger the project, the longer it will take. One thing is for sure, you’ll be using your kitchen a lot sooner if you reface and not replace.

6. How much does cabinet refacing cost?

Cabinet refacing is probably one of the best investments you can make in your home. Kitchen and bathroom improvement projects add more value to your home than any other type of home improvement. Cabinet refacing can add as much value to your home as replacing your cabinets, at half the cost! Your investment is less, your return is greater, and the project can be completed in less time, with less mess and inconvenience. That’s a win-win situation in any one’s book!
